A cybersecurity attack on Air India’s data processor back in February this year led to a data compromise of nearly 4,500,000 individuals, Told By Airline

The incident has affected around 45 lakh customers registered between 26th August 2011 and 3rd February 2021, Air India said, disclosing the scale of the breach nearly three months after it was first informed of it.
Names, date of birth, contact information and ticket information have also been compromised in the ‘highly sophisticated’ attack that targeted Geneva-based passenger system operator SITA that serves the Star Alliance of airlines including Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa and United besides Air India.

‘Personal data of passengers leaked’

“This is to inform that SITA PSS our data processor of the passenger service system (which is responsible for storing and processing of personal information of the passengers) had recently been subjected to a cybersecurity attack leading to personal data leak of certain passengers. This incident affected around 4,500,000 data subjects in the world,” Air India has said in a statement.

National carrier Air India has notified its passengers of a data breach that occurred in February at the SITA passenger service system. The airline said the breach involved data of 45 lakh passengers being leaked.

In its notification to the affected passengers, the airline stated that the cyber-assault that compromised the facts of hundreds of thousands of passengers from across the world concerned personal facts registered among august 26, 2011 and February 20, 2021. It stated the breached data included the passenger’s call, date of birth, contact records, passport facts, price tag facts, common flyer data and credit card data.
