Israel-Palestine: Whats the reas0n of the conflict?
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the world’s longest-running and most controversial conflicts. At its heart, it is a conflict between two self-determination movements — the Jewish Zionist project and the Palestinian nationalist project — that lay claim to the same territory. But it is so, so much more complicated than that, with seemingly every fact and historical detail small and large litigated by the two sides and their defenders.
Reasons for Israel-Palestins conflict:
In English, Al-Aqsa means “the farthest mosque.” Muslims believe that during the Night Journey (Al-Isra), Prophet Muhammad traveled from Mecca to Al-Aqsa and then to heaven. The mosque is situated on a rocky outcropping known as the walled plateau. The Temple Mount, one of the holiest places for Jews, is also located on the walled plateau. They say it was constructed around the time of the Bible. The Romans destroyed it in 70 AD leaving only its western part. The Jews revere this wall.
Both Israelis and Muslims of Palestine and rest of the Arab region stake their claim on the walled plateau. It is one of the disputed points that have prevented a settlement between Israel and Palestine.
Israel’s attempt to restrict gatherings at Al-Aqsa and a dispute over land ownership in Sheikh Jarrah, Jerusalem, are at the heart of the Israel-Palestine violence. It’s a conflict that dates back to Israel’s founding in 1948. After Israel’s victory in the first Arab War in 1956, the conflict gained more traction.Back then, the area where the mosque is located was under the control of Jordan, which worked with the United Nations to resettle Palestinian families that had been uprooted by the Israeli conquest in 1956.
However, Israel took control of this territory in 1967, when it annexed the West Bank, which includes the Old City of Jerusalem (also known as East Jerusalem). It was assigned the name West Bank because of its position on the west bank of the Jordan River.
Israel has maintained its dominance in the region for over five decades now. Several mediation attempts have failed to find an amicable settlement between Israel and Palestine.
For years, Al-Aqsa has been a battleground. To put down a Palestinian revolt in 2000, Israeli forces raided the mosque complex. In the past, the month of Ramzan has seen an increase in clashes in the region.
Current Dispute :
The most recent clashes erupted on April 12 after Israeli police set up barricades to prevent large crowds from forming at the Damascus Gate Plaza in Israel-controlled East Jerusalem.
The Damascus Gate Plaza has been a popular gathering place for Palestinian Muslims during the month of Ramzan. Israel feared trouble and tried to curtail the gathering.
On April 16, Israel placed a 10,000-person cap for prayer gatherings at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. For prayers, tens of thousands of Palestinians had flocked to the mosque. They were all returned.
VIOLENCE CONTINUES :
Violence has aggravated since then. More than 200 people were injured on May 7 in clashes at Al-Aqsa. Later, Palestinians were reported to have driven out Jewish families settled in Sheikh Jarrah.
In retaliation, Israel postponed a hearing on the dispute over Sheikh Jarrah’s land ownership on May 9. On Monday, grenades and rockets were launched. To force Palestinian fighters and demonstrators back, Israel launched airstrikes.
Jerusalem Day, which commemorates the city’s annexation, was observed as a national holiday in Israel on May 10. Thousands of Israelis march in the Old City every year, passing through areas heavily populated by Palestinian Muslims. This year’s day saw an increase in clashes.
MAJOR REASON FOR UPRISE OF SUCH WAR LIKE SITUATION :
The involvement of HAMAS was the major turning point. Though HAMAS is not much entertained among Palestian’s , it still came up just to show off its existance and power. The commencement of air strikes from HAMAS’s side was like putting oil in fire.
HAMAS is actually a terrorists group as accepted by many countries of the world.
